Confessions… An Artist Statement

The alchemy of human origin stories (mythology) and how its silken threads can be found in religions and the tattered tapestries of modern societies has always been at the center of my practice. The African Diaspora ethos which my own story was created, is the catalyst for my work in researching, recording and archiving the origin stories of African descendent people. More specifically, to dispel and demystify the negative stereotypes and lore of African descendent women. It is my intention to assist in further shifting the perception and value of our stories, culture and the impact on our communities through art. These histories have been recorded and reimagined by outliers. This has systematically distorted and maligned representations in literature, music and cinema. An orchestrated removal of our humanity, or soft parts. The parts that nurture and love us into wellness and wholeness as a people. When you dismantle the weaponization of African descendent women, it begs the question: how do we now see ourselves? My desire is to be a part of the collective bridgework of memory and seeing ourselves as the authors in literature, music and cinema.

Part of my obligation as an artist and archivist is to use ancestral memory and  integrate the vision they had for us.

I am committed to building community, sharing the art of storytelling, and bearing witness through a cultural lens.
